Education for all ages
When it comes to children's education, every choice is important- but those choices are perhaps most important when a family is new to a community. So newcomers to Union County are sure to put schools at the top of the "things to decide" list.Union County is fortunate to have a well-respected public school system, quality private and charter schools plus two post-high school facilities.
In addition to the public school system, Union County is home to seven private schools and one charter school.
Union Academy opened as the County's first charter school in 2000. Serving 850 students in grades K-11.Union Academy is a pubic school and charges no tuition. Students are enrolled through a public lottery held each spring.Union Academy is located on two campuses. The Lower School houses grades K-4 is located at 3828 Old Charlotte Hwy in Monroe.The Upper School houses grades 5 – 11 is located at 675 North M L King Jr Blvd in Monroe.One grade and 75 students are added each year until the school offers grades K-12. That spirit of collaboration and selflessness together with an extraordinary emphasis on academic challenge, community service, and the development of strong character certainly defines Union Academy.
Merit Academy, located in Indian Trail, is one of Union County's newest independent schools.An outgrowth of Village Park Traditional School, Merit Academy's mission is to instill in students with learning differences academic preparation, a sense of responsibility, and long-life resources to be successful.Merit Academy is a wonderful addition to the education sector of Union County due to its specialization in working with students that have specific learning differences.
South Piedmont Community College serves Anson and Union counties with campuses in Monroe, Polkton and Wadesboro.Committed to scheduling courses in a variety of lengths and times to accommodate students' needs, SPCC offers on-campus courses as well as distance learning programs.
Serving more than 14,000 students each year, SPCC offers 35 programs of study leading to associate's degrees, diplomas and certificates, as well as continuing education and basic skills courses.SPCC provides specialized industry training and emergency services training, and operates Small Business Centers in Anson and Union counties. Among SPCC's newest programs are BioWorks, a short-term training program for biotechnology workers, and an associate's degree program in biotechnology offered in collaboration with Gaston College. The first class of associated degree nursing students graduated in 2008 and went to work as registered nurses.
Founded in 1896, Wingate University is a four-year private university of more than 2,000 students founded on the core principals of faith, knowledge and service. Wingate offers 39 undergraduate majors in arts and sciences, business, education and sports sciences. Wingate University's School of Graduate and Adult Education in Matthews offers evening programs for completing a bachelor's degree, or earning a graduate degree in business, education or sport administration. The Doctorate of Pharmacy and the Master of Physician Assistant Studies are two of the newest advanced programs on the main campus.
In addition to academics, Wingate student-athletes compete in 17 NCAA Division II sports. The university has won the South Atlantic Athletic Excellence award for the past two years.
Wingate welcomes Union County businesses and residents to take advantage of a host of events and facilities available to the public. The annual Performance Series offered at the George A. Batte, Jr. Fine Arts Center showcases world-class performances and art exhibits. The university also hosts lectures by international figures and provides summer youth programs and athletic camps.
